Digital Conservation.

Virtual Reality and Digital Media in the Architectural and National Heritage.
Research work by Arch. Maha Mogannam - Ghawi

Heritage is considered as one of the essential elements that preserve culture, national image, and identity of any nation. During the past ten years, the ICT revolution in the world has affected significantly architectural styles, techniques and presentation. Palestinian architecture had its share of modernization touches, but the techniques and quality of work is still developing, as virtual reality and 3D modeling is becoming now a necessity in the field of architecture.Digital media and Virtual Reality can be used in two main ways which are different but yet integrated. The first one is the current method which aims mainly to digitalize future architecture and modernize the ways to design, present and build architectural models. And the second one, is digitalizing the past – i.e. “Virtual Past” – this method aims to create a simulation and a 3D model of an ancient architectural site, and try to simulate the archeological elements that where lost through time. The full research aims to illustrate the integration between Digital Architecture and Cultural Heritage. The Project aims to produce a unique Virtual experience that takes the visitor into a journey to the past to relive the rich Palestinian Architectural Heritage. This research will cover only a prototype that will be defined later. (Ongoing research work)
